In the past, many people dread to have their tooth extracted due to the fear of an excruciating experience. Aside from the usual amenities, dentists can now also administer anesthetics or sedatives to secure an overall pleasant experience.

  • It is essential for the patient to get some rest afterward. Avoid any strenuous activities in the meantime by asking for time off from work and school. For parents, it is best to ask a family member or friend to take care of the kids.
  • Patients are advised to consume soft foods and slowly transition to a regular diet for the following days. It is to allow the natural formation of blood clot over the extraction site.
  • Place an ice pack against the cheek to manage pain and swelling. It works best if performed within 24 hours after extraction since there will be no significant effect afterward. Do this in 15-minute intervals for at least 2 hours.
  • Make sure to take any prescribed medications as advised by the dentist. Follow the dose and duration of the intake even if the pain subsides.
  • Rinse the mouth gently with salt and warm water solution 12 hours after extraction and every meal to get rid of any debris or harmful substances.

  • Do not smoke for at least 48 hours or better yet stop smoking for good. Doing so not only secures a better recovery after a tooth extraction but better overall wellness too.
  • Avoid the intake of aspirin for it can cause the blood to become thin. It can delay the blood clotting process and the overall healing of the extraction.
  • Sipping and sucking motions are a no-no for they can disturb the clot formation.
  • Avoid poking the extraction site with any pointed item or the tongue.
  • Do not chew on the gap directly. Make sure to use the opposite side of the jaw in the meantime while healing.
